The chair of applied economics headed by Peter Egger pursues research mainly in the areas of applied international and public economics and in applied econometrics.

Project background

The project consists in measuring the number of academics employed at different affiliations across the world, in order to estimate the returns to basic/academic research in terms of higher patenting rates, and down the line, higher economic growth.

Job description

We are looking for a research assistant, starting immediately, to:

  • label affilitations in a spreadsheet, based on a quick search (wikipedia)
  • assist with searching for data on academic wages, based on public tables and web-scraping
  • potentially further programming tasks in python or bash, as well as data validation based on inspection in excel

You will be working closely together with the PhD student who is in charge of the project.

Your profile

  • Masters student from ETH/UZH. Ideally in the field of economics, computer science, data science, or mathematics
  • Ability to dedicate yourself seriously to the project for at least 8 months, in particular during semester breaks
  • Very conscientious
  • Ability to understand the goals of the project and to make decisions autonomously
  • Solid knowledge of web-scraping (can be in any language)
